Lake Districtvisitor attraction, Lakes Aquarium, has a variety of additional activities on offer between July 31 and August 15, as it helps celebrate National Marine Week and the sea life living around our coastline.
The global-themed attraction, which portrays the story of life in and around lakes of the world, and the journey of water from Windermere to the coast at Morecambe Bay, will be inviting many young and older visitors to ‘come out of their shell’.
Special sessions based around this theme will run at 12.45 each day and visitors will be invited to interact with and handle creatures they might misunderstand, or be a little nervous about. These include baby snakes and toads, a land snail and a millipede!
Visitors can aid marine conservation by giving Lakes Aquarium their message in a bottle, explaining what they love about the seashore, why they care about the fish in our seas and how they will try to help endangered species like the Monk Seal.
Messages can be up to 140 characters long and will be uploaded to the Lakes Aquarium Twitter site, to give a voice to concerns and passions for the seashore. The best messages will even win a prize.
Following a Treasure Island trail, and trying to spot the ‘treasure’ hidden in various displays, will also be both fun and potentially rewarding to those completing the quiz correctly!
Families can also gain inspiration to take back home and use in a “Design A Sea Monster” competition that asks them to create a creature that has adapted to pollution and its survival challenges.*
Tickets to Lakes Aquarium cost £8.95 for an adult, £5.95 for a child aged 3-15 and £26.95 for a family of two adults and two children, but can be bought online at savings of up to 30 per cent. Details of regular talks timings are available online at www.lakesaquarium.co.uk too. All Marine Week additional activity is free-of-charge. Lakes Aquarium is open every day, from 9am to 6pm in summer, with last admission at 5pm.
