Police appeal after serious assault

Submitted by Karen on Fri, 2010-07-30 09:23

Police have made an appeal to the public after a teenager was found unconscious in Barrow.

At 3.18am on 24 July, police were called by the ambulance service after a man was found unconscious in an alleyway adjacent to Specsavers off Dalton Road, Barrow. The 18 year old was taken to Furness General Hospital with serious head injuries and is receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit today.

DC Alarna Butcher said: “We are appealing for witnesses and information that can help us piece together the events of Saturday morning that led to a young man being seriously hurt.

“An investigation has been launched into the attack and we are attempting to establish the exact circumstances. We believe that at around 2.30am to 3.15am there were several people in the area at the top of Dalton Road near to Specsavers and B&M Bargains stores, which is not uncommon at that time. We would appeal to these individuals, or anybody was in the area and saw a man lying on a stone bench in the middle of the street to come forward and contact police.

“In particular we would like to speak to a man who was seen in the area on crutches as he may be an important witness with information that can help our ongoing enquiry.

“Friday night was typically busy in Barrow. There were lots of people out with friends who may well have information that can help us too. If you saw what happened, or who was involved, or know anything whatsoever about the incident please contact us immediately. You may have information that is vital for our investigation. Serious assaults like this are rare in Barrow and we are doing everything we can to trace who is responsible."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Barrow CID immediately on 0845 33 00 247 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
