On-street drinking ban for carnival

Submitted by Karen on Wed, 2010-07-28 09:31

Police and event organisers have been working together to ensure that this Saturday’s annual Parade in Abbeytown July 31, remains a safe and enjoyable event for all.

PC Andy Robertson, of Wigton Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "The event is really popular in the village year upon year and is always successful.

"It is a celebratory and family-orientated event, but on occasions we have had a small number of people who consume too much alcohol and may go one step too far. We do not expect any form of trouble this year and police patrols will be out in the village to ensure the event runs smoothly.

"We want everyone who attends to enjoy themselves but for those who are planning on drinking excessively and causing distress or trouble should expect to be targeted by the police.

"For the safety of people that gather, we will be enforcing an on-street drinking ban throughout the day and no alcohol will be allowed. Anyone who is in the possession of alcohol and who looks under the age of 18 will be challenged and if they cannot produce valid identification, the alcohol will be seized.

"Anyone arrested in connection with alcohol related disorder will not only be dealt with by the police but their details will also be supplied to the Pubwatch Scheme which can hand out exclusions that can last from six months to an entire lifetime."

The parade will set off at 1.30pm from Main Street, Abbeytown and will end on the recreational field at approximately 3.00pm.

PC Robertson said: "We have tried to ensure that the parade causes minimum traffic disruption, but we would ask motorists to take alternative routes and remain patient if they do get caught up in traffic."
